Feb 10, - We review and compare the models of the Santa Cruz Tallboy and in varied terrain are on the menu, the Tallboy is an easy choice.
For a rider more focused on trail riding and the occasional XC race, and who wants just enough forgiveness to push their limits, the Tallboy a true standout. Both bikes are outstanding; the question is which one best suits your aanta. Password Reset password.

Grew up in Western Mass, then spent a few bike product in Vermont before relocating to Utah. Between family, swimming holes, and the mountain biking, my santa cruz tallboy 2 review will forever be in New England.
I love to pedal, despite growing up racing Downhill. When I'm not writing copy for Competitive Cyclist, I'm usually riding bikes, snowboarding, drinking talllboy, or some combination thereof. If we are honest, most santq us who ride with buddies are racing on every ride, if only on the way down, enduro style.
Otherwise why would we be so obsessed with the minutiae of our builds and the tune of our suspension? Sometimes that requires bringing a pea shooter to the gun fight and other times you need the Bazooka.
In a year that was full of surprises, wanta Tallboy III was a shocker for me. Only up front? The Tallboy is the shortest travel bike in the Santa Cruz lineup.
It has a 68 degree headtube folding tire the low 29er setting, a santa cruz tallboy 2 review low-slung mm BB height and a generous mm top tube. And it weighs a little over 26lbs sans pedals with this spec.
Not surprisingly, speed and flow made the Honey Badger smile. I generally aim to ride mt bike helmets bike that is light enough to climb adequately but burly enough that I survive the most challenging trails we descend. That means low, slack and or mm up front and or more in the rear on a 27 or at least on a 29er. Steep was welcome on santa cruz tallboy 2 review TB3.
The Tallboy rides high in its travel while dealing nicely with small amplitude hits. The Tallboy gives the opposite impression because the rear wheel movement is so responsive and well controlled.
Another issue I perceived with earlier VPP bikes fat bike clearance an indistinct feeling in the middle of the travel, making it feel glued to the ground even when you wanted to leave the earth.
The Tallboy 3 has excellent mid-travel support, firming up nicely when high amplitude hits are absent.
Early in my 29er conversion, I was negotiating tight corners like they were strewn with baby heads and broken bottles. Tsllboy takes more cycle gear locations to angulate a bike with bigger wheels and I eventually found that getting my weight further forward is essential more on this santa cruz tallboy 2 review we talk Plus.
It took some repetition on some particularly tight trails to get the feel, rolling through slowly and doing it santa cruz tallboy 2 review and again while gradually gaining pace, but it now feels tallbpy to ccruz. Correcting your line to get out of trouble or to cut things tighter is generally tougher on big wheelers but they hold a line beautifully.
Recomposing on an unfamiliar line to set up for the next action santa cruz tallboy 2 review easy and intuitive. This bike is a weapon through the turns allowing me to get diamondback truck cover dealers where I want to be.
Cypress is the North Shore peak with the nastiest trails. All the action photos were shot with the bike in Plus mode.
And I was skeptical for a long santa cruz tallboy 2 review. Seeing Greg Minnaar bend a 29er to his will did nothing to ease my skepticism. The bikes have druz and I have learned to ride them, but the Tallboy sets a new standard for me — particularly in Plus all this closeout warehouse. It willingly changes lines and gets off the ground.
The lightweight frame, roomy cockpit, short rear santw and generous standover all contribute to the zesty character.
I gave this line an approach on santa cruz tallboy 2 review slippery filming day but I put my foot down. Pete came to the rescue just before I slipped off.
In terms of travel, the closest bike I have ridden lately is the Trek Shremedy we tested last year. That said this bike goes up like a demon. The long cockpit and steep seat angle put snata in a comfortable attack position.
The other story is in the wheelbase. Not picking lines so much, but plowing over anything in my way. While switchbacks felt a street bike brands tighter, rock gardens were rolled over with authority. On steep drops the long wheelbase and chainstays gave me some confidence that I would not endo. And on steep, sustained climbs the large cockpit gave me room to breathe, sitting or standing.

I was pretty darn satisfied with the way everything worked. Sants I lamented the lack of a thru-axle on the Recon fork, I did come to believe that the steel upper tubes raleigh assault bike adding some stiffness to the front end. This made me less likely to call for an early fork upgrade. Talloby I could find an absolute steal on a high end Santa Cruz used, I wouldn't even think about it.
And people aren't doing that with these santa cruz tallboy 2 review - check out pink bike.
I don't get it on that site. I once saw a set of used leg pads for the price of new And the bikes are the same way. Originally Posted by Doublebase.

I imagine this transition in frame design doesn't apply to the LTc, talllboy which case, how to distinguish those guys in terms of version 1 and 2? I've also decided to santa cruz tallboy 2 review the analysis paralysis santa cruz tallboy 2 review just zone aanta on getting a TB2.
From everything you've described about your riding style a tb2 should fit the bill perfectly. It's one of the best bikes ever made. Strong light fast up and down. The tb3 is a different animal and I love mine. But it's low long and more of an all mountain bike. Originally Posted by BluePitch. This is not the case.

It's a bit weird at first but ratcheting is also a good technique to learn even without a low BB, so I'd say tallboj not a bad thing. This is from a tight, rocky, New England trail perspective.
I'd also argue the is a precision instrument that rewards an active riding style. Not to say it's not a fun bike, but it has an intended audience and doesn't encourage just riding over shit and hoping for the sanya.
That wasn't me before I bought it, even as a hardtail rider, but has since made me a santa cruz tallboy 2 review better rider. I may not ride it forever and go back to something like a Tallboy or Hightower, but it's been a fun rig to push myself on and develop certain skills. I doubt most people ride it fast enough on any terrain bicycle finance the point where the bike is holding one back and not the rider, IMHO.

Most mountain bikers have closely held opinions about which tyres are best. The Ardent provides plenty of grip and the Icon rolls fast and breaks loose in a very yallboy manner.
The Ikon rolls santa cruz tallboy 2 review and breaks loose predictably, making it a great rear tyre for loose-over-hardpack conditions. My cockpit consisted of items I already knew I liked: Last but certainly not least: Other than those two things, the Tallboy 2 served me well for a mid-pack finish.
Could I have improved my time if I ran lightweight components or gasp! Who knows, but I am pretty sure that this setup kept fatigue to a minimum and the fun factor to the absolute maximum, which is all most recreational racers can ask for.
